♥  Using own skin cells to repair hearts on horizon
Robert Schwartz, University of HoustonRobert Schwartz, Cullen Distinguished Professor of Biology and Biochemistry at the University of Houston, has pioneered a breakthrough technique for turning ordinary human skin cells into early-stage heart cells. Read the news release from the University of Houston. [March 2, 2010] Schwartz is a member of the THI professional staff and director of stem cell engineering for the Stem Cell and Heart Failure Research Laboratory.

Heart Assist Device benefits 21 year old cardiomyopathy patient

Dr. Stephanie Coulter and Allyssa Smith on Fox NewsView Fox 26 news interview (5:15 min. video) with cardiologist Stephanie Coulter, MD and heart failure patient Allyssa Smith. Thanks to the HeartMate II device developed in large part at THI, Allyssa is moving on with her life and sharing her story to help raise awareness of heart disease in young women. (December 2009)
